Simple Breathwork Craft for Kids: DIY Bee Buzz Breathing Wand 🐝

Helping children learn how to slow down, breathe deeply, and regulate big emotions doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, some of the best mindfulness tools for kids are simple, playful, and hands-on.

Today we’re sharing one of our favourite preschool-friendly mindfulness crafts:

The Bee Buzz Breathing Wand!

This easy DIY breathing tool helps children actually SEE their breath in action as the tissue “bee wings” flutter and dance with every exhale.

It’s perfect for:

  • Preschool classrooms

  • Calm corners

  • Kids yoga classes

  • Childcare centres

  • Mindfulness activities

  • SEL learning

  • Rainy day crafts

Why Breathwork Matters for Kids

Breathwork teaches children how to:
✨ slow their bodies down
✨ calm busy minds
✨ build focus and concentration
✨ regulate emotions
✨ increase body awareness

For young children, breathing exercises work best when they are visual and interactive. Watching the bee wings flutter gives instant feedback and makes deep breathing feel fun instead of forced.

DIY Bee Buzz Breathing Wand

Materials Needed

  • Paper straw or popsicle stick

  • Yellow tissue paper

  • Tape or glue

  • Googly eyes

  • Black marker or black paper

  • Pipe cleaners (optional)

How to Make It

Step 1: Add the Wings

Tape 3–5 strips of yellow tissue paper to the top of a straw or popsicle stick.

These become the bee’s fluttering wings!

Step 2: Decorate Your Bee

Add:
🐝 googly eyes
🐝 stripes
🐝 a smile
🐝 antennae

Encourage children to personalize their bee however they’d like.

Step 3: Blow & Watch It Flutter

Invite children to:

  • take a deep breath in through the nose

  • blow slowly through the mouth

  • watch the tissue wings flutter gently

The slower the breath, the softer the flutter.

The stronger the breath, the bigger the movement!

How to Use It for Breathwork

🌼 Calm Bee Breath

“Take a slow breath in… now blow softly like a sleepy bee.”
